What We Do

ArtsMeetsSocialJusticeByMarkSmithCanada Without Poverty works to address the structural causes of poverty, such as public policies that advance or constrain the social and economic development of individuals, families and communities.

For example, governments set minimum wage rates.  Anyone who works full-time for the minimum wage ought from that labour be able to earn enough to meet his/her need for food, clothing, housing and other basic needs.  Currently, not one minimum wage rate set by provinces and territories comes close to being a “living wage” for individuals.  In fact, all such rates are lower today compared to 35 years ago, as much as 17% lower in the case of Manitoba and 19% lower in British Columbia – a direct failure of public policy.  Accordingly, Canada Without Poverty champions minimum wage rates being raised to a living wage standard.

Canada Without Poverty’s formal, core charitable ‘objects’ (i.e., purposes), pursuant to its Supplementary Letters Patent dated April 28, 2009, concern knowledge dissemination, research and direct assistance and are worded as follows:

  • To advance the knowledge of, and the study of, poverty in Canada by organizing conferences and workshops on topics related to poverty
  • To conduct research relating to poverty and to disseminate the results of such research
  • To alleviate poverty, to direct people to the government programs and offices by which people may access benefits to which they may be entitled
  • To do all things incidental and ancillary to the attainment of the above objects

We align all of our charitable activity with one or more of these core objects.  At any given time we are involved in many knowledge dissemination, research and/or direct assistance actions.  For examples or further information, please send a query to info@cwp-csp.ca
